I made this book as part of a semester project titled “O poti in cilju” (About the journey and the goal), exploring the theme of bureaucracy. The text of Ivan Cankar’s short story Skodelica kave (A cup of coffee) is designed as if it was edited by a bureaucrat, a sort of display of bureaucratic intervention into arts. By following the editor’s notes/reading instructions, the reader encounters feelings of confusion and helplessness, which resemble those felt throughout any bureaucratic process.
The story’s content is unchanged, but harder to read because of design choices which have no relation to the storyline. Though every intervention in explained on the facing page, that doesn’t make the reader’s journey to the goal (to read and understand the story) any easier. Te editor’s notes, which are bigger and more readable than the story, only point out the obvious, or redirect the reader toward a loop, without offering any sensible help or solution.
